New Doodle/Sketch (February 25, 2013)
Below is the fourth doodle/sketch done in my new sketchbook. This one is also very abstract – so far this is my most favorite one because it has a very playful and ‘sketchy’ quality. I like that you see all the lines that are searching for a composition and then you easily see the areas that I developed to include some volume. I like that in some areas the volumes do not make sense with the other volumes surrounding them. I think I have defaulted to just titling them Doodle/Sketch with a number as to when they were completed.

New Doodle / Sketch (February 18, 2013)
Below is the third doodle that I created in my new brown paper sketchbook. This one turned out much more abstract than the others. I just start making marks on a page and turning the sketchbook around and making more marks until I have a composition that somehow pleases me. I really do not have a title for this piece yet. I was thinking maybe “Conversation” or “Black Crow”. Are there any other suggestions?

HeartFelt Sculpture Stand (January 25, 2013)
I heard back from the Exhibition Coordinator at the Materials: Hard & Soft Exhibition about whether I had some ideas on how to display my ‘HeartFelt” sculpture. I created this quick stand for the sculpture shown below. It is very easy and quick to construct using just two pairs of pliers. It can go really fast and easy if you have a round object that you can bend the wire around. This stand would work for a lot of different types of fine art objects. The only drawback is that there is a visual horizontal line from the wire that cuts across the artwork. If anyone has a better way to exhibit this kind of artwork – I would love to hear your ideas.

Materials: Hard & Soft Exhibition (January 17, 2013)
I just shipped off my art to this exhibition at the Greater Denton Arts Council in Texas. I was really happy when I found out that I had been chosen to be part of this exhibition. This annual competition of contemporary craft has been going on for 26 years and attracts hundreds of entries from every state in the union. The juror this year is Jean W. McLaughlin, Executive Director of the Penland School of Crafts. Every year they publish a very nice exhibition catalogue – which is another reason I entered my work. Here is a link to their website where you can see artwork from the past years:

I entered my piece titled, “Heart Felt”. This work is 100% needle felted wool and can be seen with my other felt sculptures in my website under Portfolios > Sculpture > Gallery 1.
Below is the exhibition card that was just mailed out.

The Death of Redbeard (January 9, 2013)
Below is the second doodle I created in my new brown paper sketchbook. I just started putting colored pencil marks on the paper. I really had no idea what or how it was going to turn out. I turn the paper all around and place shapes, tones, marks in what seems like a good composition until some kind of a figure or idea takes hold. Sometimes, it is just totally abstract, this time a very specific image came to mind. It looked like a death bed drawing of some Viking called ‘Redbeard’.

Red Sky At Night (December 31, 2012)
When I was a very little kid – I wanted to be an Admiral in the Navy. I would study and spend time with old nautical lore. One the phrases I still remember is, “Red Sky at night – sailor’s delight, red sky in the morning – sailors take warning”. So I was always fascinated with a deep red sky in the evening. I took this shot from inside my car driving on the freeway heading south in Cincinnati.

New Sketchbook (December 20, 2012)
I bought this great new sketchbook that has a very nice medium brown tone to it. It has a nice tooth to the paper also. So I just began doodling with colored pencils on it and it turned into a very weird dragon. I have posted it here. I like this paper and will continue to use it.

More Sketches (December 11, 2012)
Here are some more sketches from my sketchbook. These are some of the more attractive women that I have seen. (Please note that any resemblance to real persons, anyone you know or love, living or dead is purely coincidental.)

Cartoons (November 26, 2012)
On occasion, I get ideas for cartoons. I don’t know why these cartoons pop up in my head – they just do. So,if I think it is funny enough I will go ahead and draw them up. Here is my latest one.
